State and Local Tax Relief for COVID-19

Several state and local agencies are providing relief to businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. These are summarized below, however as this is rapidly changing, the agency websites may have updates from the time of writing. Cities not included below did not have guidance at the time of this writing. Please check their websites for updates.

Washington Department of Revenue

  • Tax filing and payment extensions are available during the declared state of emergency (starting 2/29/20). Businesses must apply for these, but extensions are available for 60 days for monthly or 30 days for quarterly or annual filers.
  • Auditors have been instructed to be flexible on scheduling audits and allowing deadline extensions up to 60 days. Contact your auditor to discuss options. Certain audits of small businesses (<$5 million gross) and industries specifically identified in the Governor’s proclamation such as bars, restaurants, and recreational facilities have been temporarily delayed.
  • Businesses with payment plans or collection issues can contact the Department for extensions.
  • Read the DOR Response here.

Washington Employment Security Department

  • ESD has a website addressing specific questions on what benefits are available for employees and options for employers impacted by the virus.
  • Review the WA ESD response here.

City of Seattle

  • Small businesses (<$5 million gross in 2019) will receive an automatic extension of their first and second quarterly returns to October 31, 2020.
  • Businesses that do not qualify for the small business extension may request an extension with the city.
  • See the Seattle response here.
