University of Washington Studies Sick Pay

Effective January 1, 2018 the state of Washington implemented the new sick leave ordinance. While the impact of the law is difficult to quantify, the Washington Center for Equitable Growth has commissioned multiple studies to measure the effects of the ordinance on employees and employers alike. The studies evaluate whether employees are “more economically productive” as intended by the law. Additionally, the study will investigate whether the additional costs to employers associated with sick leave have reduced employee hours or slowed overall hiring practices. The Evans School of Public Policy & Governance expects findings on the research by early winter 2018.
